SUVs of All Shapes and Sizes: Understanding the 2023 Ford SUV Lineup

A red and a white 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E are shown charging.

If you're looking for a new American SUV that's well-designed and built to last, then you've come to the right place. We're proud to offer a wide range of Ford SUVs here at Ruge's Ford, from compact options that are nimble and affordable to full-size models with cavernous interiors and plenty of power.

With so many options to choose from, shopping for a Ford SUV can feel overwhelming at times—but don't worry, we're here to help. In this guide, we'll go over Ford's SUV lineup for the 2023 model year. Whether you know what model you're leaning toward already or are starting completely from scratch, this information should come in handy. Let's take a look at what you can expect from a 2023 Ford SUV...

Escape

Compact and ready for action, the Escape is a versatile option with well-rounded strengths. It can seat up to five people across two rows. If you need room for cargo rather than passengers, you can fold some seats down to unlock up to 65.4 cu.ft. of cargo space. There are four different powertrains available, two of which are traditional gasoline-powered options; the other two are efficient hybrids.

The Escape received a complete makeover for the 2023 model year, with a more modern exterior and a cozy new interior layout. There are tech upgrades, too: the 2023 Escape uses Ford's Sync 4 infotainment system rather than the Sync 3 system that was included in the 2022 model. Sync 4 is capable of over-the-air updates, so your software will stay up-to-date automatically as improvements are rolled out. It also features enhanced voice recognition and a built-in navigator connected to the internet to provide real-time traffic data. New to the lineup of trims, the sporty ST-Line series features exclusive styling like a black mesh grille and a rear spoiler.

Edge

Like the Explorer, the Edge is a two-row option that seats up to five. But it provides a roomier interior, with 73.4 cu.ft. of cargo space behind the first row. A 2.0L EcoBoost engine comes standard and provides up to 250 hp. Upgrade to the ST trim, and you'll get a 2.7L V6 EcoBoost that brings that figure up to 335 hp. Outside, you'll get a bold, aggressive exterior dripping with style. The interior is refined and filled with comfort and convenience features, especially on higher trim levels; these features include dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient mood lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and both USB-A and USB-C ports for keeping all of your devices charged while on the go.

New for the 2023 model year, the ST Interior Appearance Package can make the cabin even more lush and inviting, with leather-trimmed seats featuring red and blue accent stitching and a perforated leather steering wheel. The package also features exclusive front and rear floor mats and door inserts, as well as a unique center console lid. Ford's Perimeter Alarm feature now comes standard on the ST trim for extra security and peace of mind. The SE and SEL get some love, too, with a newly-standard silver honeycomb grille with a chrome surround that gives the Edge an iconic fierce look.

Explorer

Between its interior, which can seat up to seven, and its towing capacity of up to 5,300 lbs, the Explorer gives you plenty of ways to bring cargo and passengers along for the ride. There are three different powertrains for drivers to choose from. The 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 engine delivers up to 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, while the 3.0L EcoBoost V6 churns out 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque for a peppier ride. For a solid balance between power and efficiency, you can opt for the 3.3L V6 Hybrid Engine, which can produce up to 318 hp and 322 lb-ft of torque. It's also fully off-road capable and can provide a towing capacity of up to 5,000 lbs.

The base level trim comes standard with plenty of useful features, including rear parking sensors, a power liftgate that opens and closes at the push of a button, and a terrain management system that lets you easily switch between up to seven selectable drive modes for optimal settings in a range of situations. Of course, higher-tier trims have even more to love. The Timberline trim is perfect for adventure, with 8.66 inches of ground clearance, protective steel underbody skid plates, and an off-road light kit mounted on the grille. The sporty ST trim comes standard with a 3.0L V6 EcoBoost engine, quad chrome exhaust tips, and exclusive styling features. At the very top, the Explorer Platinum comes standard with features like leather seats, tri-zone automatic climate control with rear auxiliary climate control, and a wireless charging pad.

Expedition

As a full-size SUV, the Expedition can seat up to eight people and tow up to 9,300 lbs. In addition to on-road comfort, the Expedition also offers off-road capability, especially on the Timberline trim, which features off-road shocks, a rough road suspension, 10.6 inches of ground clearance, skid plates, and exterior zone lighting that can illuminate your campsite at night and is easy to control remotely using the FordPass app. The Timberline also comes standard with a 3.5L EcoBoost High-Output engine, which provides 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain also comes with the Stealth Performance Edition Package. The base engine, a 3.5L EcoBoost V6, packs in plenty of power, however, with a maximum of 380 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.

The Timberline trim has received a few upgrades for the 2023 model year. Trail 1 Pedal Drive is now a standard feature. This comes in handy while performing tricky maneuvers at low speeds, like crawling over boulders. It essentially allows you to perform one-pedal driving because the hydraulic brake is applied when you lift your foot off the accelerator pedal. Inside the cabin, the Timberline Equipment Group now features a black onyx color. The Platinum trim also gets a new styling option: an exterior color called Iconic Silver.

Bronco & Bronco Sport

The Bronco is a rough-and-tumble off-road SUV that's ready for adventure and is available with removable doors and a removable roof for an open-air feel. The Bronco Sport has a similar look but is a little more refined for optimal on-road action, with a fully enclosed body. However, it's still available in trail-ready trims that offer plenty of off-road capability. New for 2023, both of these models are available in Heritage Edition trims that feature retro styling inside and out, including exclusive body colors, white exterior accents, and plaid seats.

Mustang Mach-E

An all-electric SUV that's built to deliver top-notch performance, the Mustang Mach-E takes plenty of cues from the pony car it's named for. It can deliver 480 hp and a whopping 634 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to go from zero to sixty in 3.5 seconds. The EV powertrain features a pair of motors that work together to deliver eAWD and a MagneRide damping system.

One of the most popular Ford SUVs, a blue 2023 Ford Escape, is shown driving on a tree-lined road.
