Ford's History of Innovation

Determined to put the world on wheels, Henry Ford was an innovator in every sense of the word. In 1896, he debuted the "Quadricycle," which had four bicycle wheels powered by a four-horsepower engine and was steered by a tiller. Ford tinkered with his inventions over the next several years before turning heads in 1901 when his 26-horsepower "Sweepstakes" defeated an established racecar driver. This success inspired Ford's launch of the short-lived Henry Ford Company.

In 1903, Ford teamed up with a dozen investors to launch the modern Ford Motor Company. The same year, the company debuted the Model A and turned a significant profit of $37,000 in a matter of months. With his sights on expansion and growth, Ford opened the Ford Motor Company of Canada in 1904 and an overseas sales branch in Paris in 1908, just as the automaker debuted the Model T.

Simple, durable, and affordable, the Model T put the world on wheels and forever changed how people live and work. Its popularity inspired the introduction of the moving assembly line that pioneered a new and more efficient way to work in Ford's many manufacturing plants and, later, in thousands of other businesses worldwide. This set the stage for future Ford models like the Model TT truck, which laid the groundwork for the F-Series and what we know today as the Ford F-150, the best-selling truck in America for decades. It also led to further innovations like Ford's revolutionary flathead V8 engine, the first of its kind and a staple in the industry for over 20 years.

After lending its hand to the war efforts in the 1940s, the Ford Motor Company returned to business as usual with models like the 1949 Ford, which was a far cry from the 1928 Model A with its updated V8 engine and airplane-inspired grille. Even bigger changes were in store for American drivers over the next several decades as Ford consistently proved its ability to meet the needs and demands of its customers. This is apparent in classics like the Thunderbird and the Ford Mustang, trucks like the Ranger and F-150, and SUVs like the Ford Bronco, Explorer, and Expedition--many of which still have a place in the Ford lineup today.

A Legacy of Our Own

Would you believe that Ruge's Ford has been in business almost as long as your favorite brand? As Americans were first introduced to Ford's flathead V8 engine, Joseph Ruge pursued his entrepreneurial dreams and opened a fueling station and repair shop in Rhinebeck in 1935. Shortly after becoming an Oldsmobile dealer, Joseph moved the business to a nearby location and spent the rest of the 1930s and 1940s laying the groundwork for what would become one of the most revered dealerships in the region.

Welcoming his family into the business, Joseph continued to build his legacy throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. The dealership saw the addition of sales, Ford service, and parts departments that made it a comprehensive automotive center that was more than capable of handling every automotive need. Joseph's goal was simple--to build a dealership that offered big brand sophistication and small-town values.

Offering exactly that and so much more, the dealership saw ongoing growth with the addition of Subaru to the lineup, a rarity in the region that further distinguished Ruge's from everyone else. When Joseph's son took the helm, the company grew exponentially with the addition of Ruge's Chrysler Plymouth Dodge in the mid-1980s, followed by Ruge's Chevrolet in 2016 and Ruge's Ford in 2020.

Still family-owned and operated, Ruge's Ford is built on Joseph Ruge's original vision of delivering an exceptional car-buying experience at a dealership that offers the brands you love and the small-town values you embrace and embody. It's because of this commitment that hundreds of customers like you have joined the Ruge family. Local drivers know that we're here to handle all their automotive needs with integrity, respect, and transparency.
